Formas intersticiais: a poética da impermanência em Yasujiro Ozu

This work seeks to reflect upon Yasujiro Ozu’s cinema in light of Ma, a traditional Japanese notion that concerns an interstitial quality. We notice that the director’s films are permeated by the singularity of the Japanese aesthetic and religious experience when using an interstitial space-time in which an atmosphere emerges from a formal affirmation of emptiness (Ma). Especially in his late works, this quality triggers a placid movement and a meditative rhythm that arise as the founding characteristics of his poetics of the everyday. Such movements emanate from the interstitial relations that are provoked by the singular use of spaces and time inscribed in the films.
